T rex Cousin Found in Wales

Published: 27th Aug 2015

Sam Davies, an amateur fossil hunter, has discovered the foot of a meat-eating dinosaur in Wales that was distantly related to T rex. He spotted the ancient foot underneath a rock as he walked along the same beach where two brothers had discovered further parts of the same dinosaur in 2014. Sam could immediately distinguish the fingers and toes in the fossil and his first thought was that it could belong to a dinosaur.

This was confirmed by his tutor Dr David Martill who dated the dinosaur to 200 million years ago. It was a small predatory dinosaur that would have been about 50 cm tall with small teeth for catching insects, lizards and other small dinosaurs. It lived at the start of the Jurassic period when that area had a hot climate.
