The skull and horns of a new species of ceratopsian dinosaur has been discovered in Mexico. The complete horns have not been found but scientists estimate they would be over 1.2 metres in length, that is longer than any other dinosaur horns known. The dinosaur has been named Coahuilaceratops magnacuerna, and would have been similar to Triceratops with a horn above each eye, and a much shorter snout horn. Coahuilaceratops lived 72 million years ago during the late Cretaceous in what was an area rich in vegetation, although now it is desert Coahuilaceratops weighed about 5 tonnes and was 6.7 metres long and 2.1 metres tall at the hips. It is named after the Mexican region in which it was found – Coahuila, whilst the species name refers to the ‘long horn’.
